Fricourt Memorial
The Memorial to the men of the 7th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment
Photographs of the Memorial commemorations and the original pre-1921 Memorial can be viewed by selecting here.
The Fricourt Memorial commemorates officers and men of the 7th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, who lost their lives during the opening stages of the Battle of the Somme in July 1916 or who subsequently died of their wounds.
The memorial stands within Fricourt British Cemetery, close to the ground over which the battalion fought on 1 July 1916. 92 men of the battalion who died during the fighting that day are also buried in the cemetery surrounding the memorial.
Fricourt is therefore a particularly important place of remembrance for the Yorkshire Regiment and provides a direct connection between the names recorded on the memorial, the men buried in the cemetery, and the battlefield on which they fought.
The Memorial was erected in 1921, and replaced a temporary wooden memorial which had been put in place at an earlier date. Mary Henry, a granddaughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Ronald Fife, who was the Commanding Officer of the 7th Battalion on 1 July 1916, very kindly donated a photograph of this early memorial to the Green Howards Museum. A copy of this photograph is shown below, in which the Regimental Numbers of the men who fell are also included.
The commemorations on the 1921 Memorial are of 117 names of the men of the 7th Battalion. These are recorded on three sections of the 1921 memorial. 89 of these names refer to men buried in the cemetery, while the other names refer to men buried elsewhere or who have no known grave and are commemorated elsewhere.
Subsequent research points out that the recording of the names on the memorial is very inaccurate. There are numerous spelling and identification errors in the memorial inscriptions. These discrepancies are retained below because they form an important part of the historical record.
The Commemorations
The information below is based on the original Fricourt Memorial page and retains the biographical details, burial information and research notes which accompany the names. The wording of the memorial inscriptions is also recorded where the original research identifies a discrepancy.
